Currently the only Codes of Practice in Ireland pertaining to events were published in 1996 and are concerned with Safety at events held at Sports Grounds and Outdoor Pop Concerts and other outdoor musical events. As we all know the context and nature of Events particularly those in public spaces has changed considerably since 1996 and while the current codes do refer to the fact that the guidelines include good practice that can apply to all events, it is my opinion that a New Code of Practice for Outdoor Events, held in public spaces, other lands or Stadia, should issue.

The current Codes of Practice refer to the sufficient competence with relevant experience, status and authority in relation to those who operate as Event Controllers/ Safety Officers etc. How is this being assessed by licensing authorities/promoters? - should it be assessed by the licensing authority or should it be the sole responsibility of the promoter only to stand over the competence etc. of their Event Controller, Safety Officers, Chief Stewards etc. A professional accreditation system might be a good way to provide a method by which competence and experience could be assessed and attributed.

Some of the legislation referred to in the Codes has since been updated.

I would like to put forward a suggestion that organisers no longer have to place ads in local and national newspapers. I firmly believe that newspapers have become antiquated and that notifications should be put up on a national “public events” website so that all stakeholders can easily access the information and organisers aren’t paying hefty advertising rates.

Leading on from that I would like to put forward the suggestion that a National Public Events website is developed.
